2008-2009 Ramblers Roundup

The Texas Research Ramblers Genealogical Society completed another busy year as its membership increased. Monetary donations were made to the Carnegie Center of Brazos Valley History and the Clayton Library in Houston. A paver, with the inscription “In Memory, Mary Collie Cooper, 1921-2003, also was donated to a Clayton Library project. Ramblers donated a lapel microphone to the Senior Circle in appreciation for the use of the meeting place.

Ramblers worked on several projects during the year including indexing births, marriages, deaths, marriage licenses, divorces and real estate transactions for the Carnegie Library. The organization also continued surveying Brazos County cemeteries and placing the results on its web site. A new quarterly newsletter was begun in the spring and members were surveyed about their interests. Trevia Wooster Beverly was the speaker for the Mary Collie Cooper Memorial Lecture in May and Ramblers also held a cemetery field trip, an encapsulation workshop and sponsored several orientation sessions for beginning genealogists. The Ramblers also became a member of the Federation of Genealogical Societies.

Monthly programs featured guest speakers on the topics of "Preserving Historical Documents by Encapsulation," "Return: The Parker Story," "Clayton Library Changes," “Organizing Your Genealogy Files" and "Spanish Surname Research." In addition, members gave a report from the Ramblers trip to the LDS Library in Salt Lake City, as well as programs on death records, migration trails, writing family history and cemetery photography. A social was held in December and a potluck luncheon, officer election and a silent auction were held in July. Research trips were made to Salt Lake City, Utah, Houston and Conroe.

Ramblers look forward to another year of research and discoveries about family history.
