History of Smetana Cemetery:

The cemetery is owned and maintained by the Smetana Cemetery Association. The Cemetery Association created a trust fund  31 May 1978 for the purpose of using the trust monies to maintain the cemetery.

The land was originally purchased 26 November 1892 by John Brandesky, Joseph Zemanek and Jacob Sramek who were trustees of the Moravian Grave Yard (Brazos County Deed Book 9, page 548).  They purchased 3 acres for $45 that were located in the John Williams headright.

The first known graves were for Frances Z. Brandesky(died 1889) (wife of John Brandesky) and her three children: Frances - 1883-1884; Anna - 1884- 1884 and Infant - 1889-1889.  Frances Z. Brandesky was the daughter/sister of Joseph Zemanek and Joseph Zemanek Jr.  Joseph Zemanek Jr. purchased Lot 68 where Frances and her children are buried.
